Midwest Marine Group provides independent Pre-Purchase & Condition Surveys for recreational vessels, commercial vessels, workboats, fishing vessels and other marine assets. Our surveys provide prospective buyers and owners with a detailed assessment of a vessel’s condition before purchase, helping identify defects, maintenance requirements and potential areas of concern before a financial commitment is made.

Our inspections combine practical marine surveying experience with detailed visual assessment and, where required, non-destructive testing and advanced inspection technologies to provide a clear understanding of the vessel’s overall condition.

Pre-Purchase Survey Services

Hull & Structural Condition

The hull and supporting structure are inspected for evidence of damage, corrosion, cracking, deformation, deterioration, previous repairs and other conditions that may affect structural integrity.

For aluminium and steel vessels, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing can be undertaken where required to investigate plate wastage or areas of concern.

For GRP vessels, inspections can include assessment for cracking, impact damage, moisture-related deterioration, delamination and other visible indications of laminate defects.

Machinery & Engineering Systems

Accessible machinery and engineering systems are inspected for their general condition, installation and apparent maintenance status.

Depending on the vessel and survey scope, this may include engines, gearboxes, propulsion systems, steering equipment, generators, pumps, fuel systems, cooling systems, hydraulic equipment and associated machinery.

Where appropriate, operational testing and sea trials can be incorporated into the survey.

Electrical, Navigation & Safety Systems

The vessel's electrical installation, batteries, distribution systems and accessible wiring are visually assessed for condition and apparent suitability.

Navigation, communication, firefighting and lifesaving equipment can also be inspected, together with available certification and documentation relevant to the vessel.

For commercial vessels, the survey can consider applicable operational and regulatory requirements where these form part of the agreed scope.

Non-Destructive Testing & Advanced Inspection

Where further investigation is required, Midwest Marine Group can support the survey with additional inspection techniques including:

• Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UT)

• Visual Testing (VT)

• Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI)

• Thermal imaging

• Moisture testing

• Borescope inspection

• Drone inspection

• ROV underwater inspection

These capabilities allow identified areas of concern to be investigated in greater detail and can provide additional information regarding structural condition, corrosion, cracking, moisture intrusion and inaccessible areas.

Sea Trials & Operational Testing

Where appropriate, a sea trial can be undertaken to assess the vessel and its systems under operating conditions.

This may include observations of engine performance, steering response, propulsion systems, vibration, operating temperatures, navigation equipment and other machinery or systems that cannot be adequately assessed while the vessel is alongside or ashore.

Independent Survey Reporting

Following the inspection, Midwest Marine Group provides a comprehensive survey report detailing the vessel's condition, observations and identified defects.

Findings can be supported by photographs and, where appropriate, categorised according to their significance. Recommendations may be provided for repairs, maintenance, further investigation or specialist assessment.

The report provides the prospective purchaser with independent technical information to assist with purchase decisions, negotiations and future maintenance planning.
