University of WA

The University of Western Australia operates a network of High Frequency (HF) Ocean Radar stations along the Western Australian coastline to monitor ocean currents and coastal conditions. To maintain the accuracy of these systems, each radar station requires periodic calibration using an airborne radio frequency transmitter flown in a precise circular pattern around the receiving antenna.

For this project, Midwest Marine Group utilised a DJI Matrice 300 RTK to carry the calibration transmitter. As no commercially available mounting solution existed for the payload, our team designed and manufactured a custom 3D-printed mounting bracket specifically for the aircraft. The mount securely integrated the transmitter while maintaining aircraft balance and flight performance.

Using the Matrice 300 RTK, we conducted a series of accurate circular flight paths around the radar installation, ensuring the transmitter remained at the required radius and altitude throughout the calibration process. The custom-designed mounting system performed flawlessly, allowing the calibration to be completed safely, efficiently, and with a high degree of positional accuracy.

This project demonstrates our ability to develop bespoke engineering solutions, integrate specialist payloads with UAV platforms, and deliver precision aerial operations for scientific research and environmental monitoring.
