Midwest Marine Group completed the creation of a high-resolution 3D digital twin of a small railway locomotive in Perth using advanced drone photogrammetry techniques.

The project involved manually capturing approximately 250 high-resolution images using a DJI Matrice 300 RTK equipped with a DJI P1 45 MP full-frame mapping camera. Images were collected from multiple angles to ensure complete coverage and maximise reconstruction accuracy.

The dataset was processed in Agisoft Metashape to generate a detailed 3D digital model, providing an accurate representation of the locomotive's geometry and surface condition. The resulting digital twin can be used for engineering assessments, heritage preservation, asset management, virtual inspections and future maintenance planning.

This project demonstrates how drone-based photogrammetry can efficiently create highly accurate digital replicas of complex assets while significantly reducing the time and cost associated with traditional surveying methods.
