Midwest Marine Group was engaged to conduct an Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) Survey on a 10-metre aluminium catamaran as part of a routine condition assessment.
Using calibrated ultrasonic thickness testing equipment, our surveyors systematically inspected all accessible hull plating from the waterline to the chine to assess the structural condition of the vessel. Ultrasonic testing provides an accurate, non-destructive method of measuring remaining material thickness, enabling internal corrosion, pitting and plate wastage to be identified where visual inspection alone may not reveal underlying defects.
The survey identified several areas where measured plate thicknesses were outside acceptable tolerances, highlighting locations requiring further investigation and remedial action. A comprehensive report was prepared detailing the inspection results, thickness measurements and recommendations to assist the vessel owner in planning repairs and maintaining the vessel's structural integrity.
Ultrasonic thickness testing is an essential component of condition surveys, pre-purchase inspections, insurance surveys and asset integrity programs, helping vessel owners make informed maintenance decisions while supporting compliance with applicable marine standards.
